Abstract
Flash memory has now become a crucial building block of embedded systems. Based on the great success of using flash cards in digital cameras and mobile phones, mobile PC's now also strongly demand flash-memory-based solid-state disks (SSDs) for the replacement of power-hungry hard drives. While recent flash-memory technologies aim at improving storage density, the prices paid for are degraded reliability and performance. This talk first introduces the architecture and design of a SSD. Open research issues, such as wear leveling, striping, and hybrid memory combinations will then be addressed.
